Whipple Company Store

whipple company store.jpgWhipple Company Store is an 1890 built, one of a kind coal camp company store.  It serviced the coal camp and coal mine of Whipple and surrounding coal camps in southern Fayette County from 1890 to 1954. One of the last standing wooden company stores today, its unique architectural structure and style introduces one to the life, and times in the Southern West Virginia coalfields. Everything from candy to caskets was sold at the company store.  Paying with scrip or buying on credit was a way of life for the miners and there families.

Whipple Company Store is now home to the Appalachian Heritage Educational Museum, a non-profit museum whose goal is to preserve and protect our coal mining heritage. You can tour the store and view its many original artifacts. The hand operated elevator, telephone operators station, 1890 post office, the walk in safe, the 3rd floor ballroom just to name a few. Join us for a coal mine adventure where you can mine for coal, get paid in scrip, and make purchases at the company store. A great hands on experience for school age youth.
